soy

SOY provides not only remarkable nutritional benefits but also important medicinal and disease-preventing properties. Increased intake of SOY is helpful in the prevention and treatment of cancer and heart disease (especially related to high cholesterol). Much of soy’s benefits are dependent upon its phytoestrogens. These compounds can help prevent many problems associated with menopause such as hot flashes and night sweats.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Soy (Glycine max) is a member of the pea family also known as legumes. Even though it is “just a vegetable”, soy’s health benefits are so dramatic that it rates its own place in the TOP 10 natural PRODUCTS. Research shows that it is effective against the number one and number two killers in the United States, heart disease and cancer. Yet, most Americans include little, if any, soy in their diets (an average of only one to three milligrams a day). In some other countries, like Japan, many times that amount is devoured each day.
Soybeans were first grown in Eastern Asia over 5,000 years ago. The Chinese recognized soybeans as their most important crop. The soybean was introduced into Europe around the 1700′s but it was not grown as an agricultural crop. About 50 years ago, it was discovered that soybeans yield ten times the amount of protein as beef cattle on the same acreage. This discovery led to soybean production on a large commercial basis. It is a great source of protein at a reasonable price
The United States is the world’s largest producer of soybeans. However, almost all of the soy we produce is either exported or used in food for livestock and pets possibly explaining why our pets are generally more healthy than we are.. In countries, where soy is a major part of the diet, there is a much lower incidence of breast, prostate and some other cancers. High soy intake has also been associated with decreases in heart disease, osteoporosis and menopausal symptoms.
